in Westchester County, NY
Cockroaches are one of the most common household pests not only in the United States, but in the entire world. On average, these roaches can range from anywhere between half an inch to inches long. There are a couple of reasons they can be attracted to your home, so knowing what you’re doing and what type of roach you are dealing with can help you get rid of them.
The German roach is the most common one to be found indoors and is attracted to water. By reducing access to water sources in your home can help reduce a roach infestation. Cleaning daily and properly sorting your food can also help prevent an infestation.
Roaches enter homes in search of food, water, and shelter. If they have infested an area, they can quickly multiply. This poses a threat to your comfort and health. It is important to rid your home of roaches before the infestation occurs, as they are known to carry bacteria. This bacteria can result is food poisoning, diarrhea, allergies, and skin rashes. If they are found in large numbers, you can even smell them.
Before deciding how to kill the roaches, you need to develop a plan. More than one treatment method is usually required for the most effective results.
How to Eliminate Cockroaches
Cockroaches are very common insects and cause issues to homeowners all across the world. There are particular ways of dealing and preventing them from infesting your home.
However, sometimes where there is a will, there is a way. Learn about how to eliminate cockroaches once they enter your home.
1. Identify Problem Areas
The first step in eliminating cockroaches is to examine your home for where you think the roach-infested sites are located. Best to use a flashlight, as they are often in dark areas. These popular hiding spots include behind the fridge, under the sink, in crevices in shelving and cabinets, and in the corners of bathroom cabinets and closets.
Roach glue strips are useful in locating large infestations and the next step after inspecting with a flashlight. Decide where the most strategic areas are to place the strips and monitor them for a few days. If the strips are in high-traffic areas, you will most likely catch many of the roaches. And in summation, these areas will require the most attention moving forward.
2. Close the Gaps
Traps are effective in reducing the roach population, but they will not prevent roaches from getting in from the outside. In order to prevent an expansion of the problem, using caulk to fill the entry points can be quite effective. This includes sealing gaps between walls or tile, small crevices, and entry holes. Weatherstripping on doors and window seals is also recommended.
3. Gel Bait Stations
Gel bait usually comes in the form of a tube and can be applied under baseboards, in crack and crevices, and near areas that have a high attraction to roaches. Though is it effective in killing roaches, it has a downside. You run the risk of having dead roaches lying around in your home, so cleanup and maintenance is required.
Bait stations are also effective and work by attracting roaches into stations to feed on poison. Once it eats the poison, it hopefully travels back to its home to die. Then it can be eaten by other roaches and pass on the poison. This method, though, does not target all roaches and can be an issue since the stations contain poison. It is also unappealing to look at these stations all across the home.
4. Boric Acid Powder
Boric acid is a substance that is found in products like detergent and toothpaste and can be formulated to create a poison to cockroaches. It is created chemically by combining boron and water. The acid created is low in toxicity to people and pets, but deadly to cockroaches.
However, when used incorrectly, it can lose its effectiveness. Also, it is easily misapplied and can be displaced by air currents that send the materials into areas where kids and pets are and away from combating the cockroaches.
These homemade methods are great, but sometimes infestations are too out of control for you to take care of on your own. If you’re experiencing cockroach problems, contact us today. We have years of experience handling roaches and can devise the best methods to eliminate the problem.
