Boric acid is a substance that is found in products like detergent and toothpaste and can be formulated to create a poison to cockroaches. It is created chemically by combining boron and water. The acid created is low in toxicity to people and pets, but deadly to cockroaches.

However, when used incorrectly, it can lose its effectiveness. Also, it is easily misapplied and can be displaced by air currents that send the materials into areas where kids and pets are and away from combating the cockroaches.
